Raj Seekri

When Raj Seekri thinks of people who have changed the world for the better, he thinks of his father.

The Ram Lal Seekri Endowed Scholarship, for which Raj donated $25,000 to the DCCCD Foundation in 2009, is a memorial tribute to his father’s lifelong commitment to education and his tireless efforts to improve his community. The scholarship is awarded to deserving Richland students who demonstrate financial need.

“My father was a teacher who dedicated his whole life to education,” says Raj. “In his area of Punjab State of northern India, he literally went door to door encouraging mothers to send their children to school. He was far ahead of his time encouraging parents to educate their daughters, because in those days it was thought that girls didn’t need formal education as wives and mothers.”

Although he worked in corporate management for 34 years, Raj has also taught continuously since 1960 and has been a full-time math professor at Richland for the past decade. “My father ignited the dream in me to teach, as well as how to live my life,” he says. The family has set up memorial scholarships not only at Dallas College, but at the University of Texas at Dallas and Ball State University in Indiana.

“It’s a fulfilling feeling to be able to help students change their lives through education,” says Raj. “My father accomplished so much and helped so many people in his lifetime, and he never expected anything in return.

“It’s unbelievable what one person can do,” he says. “My father changed the face of education in the community where he lived. We want to honor that legacy.”

Like Raj, you, too, can transform students’ lives by making a gift to the Dallas College Foundation in memory or in honor of a loved one. Visit our Other Ways to Give section or donate now.
