The Rising Star Program

Investing in success

By 2030, about 60 percent of jobs will require some post-secondary education and training. The Rising Star Program provides incentive and encouragement for high school students to stay in school, graduate and continue on to college.

Rising Star provides up to $4,000 in tuition and books to eligible Dallas County high school seniors who graduate with a “B” average or better and demonstrate economic need. Students can choose an associate degree, university transfer degree or become certified in a professional skill. To ensure their success, recipients benefit from personalized support offered through the Rising Star offices at each of the seven DCCCD colleges.

The colleges of DCCCD provide the recruiting, marketing and the case management of these students to increase their chances of successful completion or transfer to a university. All administrative costs are covered by DCCCD, so every dollar donated to Rising Star is used for its intended purpose — tuition and books for students.

“I don't think I would be a nurse today without the Rising Star Program. It allowed me access to money that I otherwise would not have had. The mentoring I received from the program was also helpful."

- Between 400 to 600 new students are recruited yearly while retaining more than twice that number
- 14,500 students have enrolled in the Rising Star Program since its inception in 1999
- Approximately 2,600 Rising Star students enroll in the seven DCCCD colleges each fall and spring semester

Global Impact

Through the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Rising Star is known around the world. It serves as a model scholarship program in seven countries throughout Africa, in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
